Rep. Avelar Hails Opening of Lewis University Air Traffic Control Tower
BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — State Rep. Dagmara Avelar, D-Bolingbrook, is celebrating the ribbon
cutting of the new air traffic control tower at the Lewis University Airport in Romeoville.
“This new air traffic control tower will make our airspace safer, especially for the residents living
under the flight paths of planes using the airport,” Avelar said. “The tower will also increase the
volume of traffic our area can handle, optimizing our community for further economic growth. The
completion of this project marks a new beginning for our community and I am excited to see what the
future holds.”
The air traffic control tower project was included in the 2019 Rebuild Illinois plan, a multi-billion
dollar initiative that invests in Illinois’ transportation system, creates jobs and promotes economic
growth. The project also received funding from the Joliet Regional Port District and the Federal
Aviation Administration. The eight story tower will be operational in December 2022.
“The new air traffic control tower is the culmination of years of hard work at all levels of government,
and I am overjoyed that all of our efforts are finally coming to fruition,” Avelar said. “This successful
project is proof that when we work together, we can improve our community’s safety, economy and
overall quality of life.”
